Yes, it is possible to do this ethically!
With the advent of the GPT, creating content online has become easier than ever.
Putting together a complete website with thousands of products can now be done overnight!
GPT is like having several employees, a team of writers, an editor, and a marketing team.
IF you know how to use it.
AI can empower solopreneurs like myself and small businesses in amazing ways.
I see a future where individuals own more of their labor and time, and are fully empowered by automated solutions.
I have just started writing eBooks (my first attempt at sci fi horror novels), using ChatGPT to speed up the process.
WHAT? W-Tee-Eff? Who wants to read a computer generated book? That’s total BS. And it’s just piracy, man!
If you just let AI crank it out and publish it AS-IS, then — I would have to agree.
You don’t have to do that, you know?
You could let AI be fountain for creative ideas. And not be LAZY.
I am using a combination of dreams I have had, which are …broken stories…. and using GPT to weave them into engaging rich stories, and make my characters more believable, so they sound less like me talking to myself.
(No, I do not have any full book examples yet, but I will be creating a new Medium account to start that adventure for real, posting chapter by chapter, I’ll update this blog and post the link here when I do)
A Springboard of Ideas
You could allow AI to take you places you wouldn’t otherwise go.
Give you ideas you wouldn’t otherwise have had.
Before you just publish a claim or explanation that A.I. has given you, research it.
Validate it.
In the process gather sources, so you can note them.
If you are writing fiction, google search the plot. If you can find something too similar, ditch it.
Character Creation
If you are writing a character, you can ask ChatGPT to speak in the tone of a hypothetical person, as you describe them.
Then, ask it to speak as that person when you need help with dialogue.
Each chat window is a separate bot being trained to respond to you. It remembers your previous commands.
Me? I am HORRIBLE at writing characters that don’t ….. sound like me.
So I’ll open ChatGPT and say something like :
Usually, it takes a bit more training to develop a consistent likeable character tone. The first response is often not exactly what you wanted.
Keep going.
That, is useable. Not perfect, and I’ll likely modify it a bit, but totally usable.
Then, whenever that character needs a line and I am not totally happy with my own ideas, I can feed the sentence(s) into my trained character GPT, and get a line that often sounds better, or gives me a better place to start when I’m stuck.
Very often, the response from AI is not exactly what I want, and I end up changing it a bit.
AI nails some things very well though.
I ask to write using keywords like :
Tone. Rhythm. Style. Ambience. Mood. Counterpoint. Blending.
Blending
You can also ask it to blend writers, characters, and more!
This is where I command AI to blend 2 or more writers or examples of writing.
You may notice, the initial output is often in need of refinement.
Almost always.
This is training the bot.
Better. But, still needs some work.
I really admire the way Stephen King and other horror writers often open with a dialogue that sets a mood.
Let’s see if I can coax GPT to give me some of that.
Character Development
You still need to think like a storywriter, in order get AI to return text that truly engages the audience and has rich characters.
Anything you leave out, AI may or may not incorporate.
Ask AI to develop the characters and start to explain them, give insight into their lives through the dialogue, make them relatable to an audience.
Ask AI to come up with Plot Twists, or Character Surprises
This is a fun one.
This is where AI really shines and can help you with all sorts of story elements like foreshadowing, character / story archs, and more!
Ok. A.I. is really starting to write the entire story here, but it is still pretty… cheesily generic, from a true cosmic horror fan perspective.
I’m going to back off and read the paragraphs over and over.
There are elements that are usable, but the dialogue content is a bit….. meh.
Time to put pen to paper (or keystroke), and come up with two of my own characters based on the AI’s characters.
I am going to attempt to imitate the style and tone of the AI generated piece.
But I am going to write it as I would, borrowing much, but without it being quite so cheesmo.
AI is doing the best it can. It’s not great at everything.
It cannot really insert proper humor.
Sometimes dialogue will be flowery…… a little too flowery.
And a believable dialogue must be trained for a while before it starts to be as you want it, but by then, you already likely know What You Want, and have a Better Idea of How To Write It.
This can be training wheels for YOU!
After you have generated a few chapter ideas this way, you may find it’s actually a bit easier to sit and write something more cohesive by yourself, using the style, rhythm, tone, mood etc, that AI has inspired for you.
You do not have to let AI write the entire thing.
See? It’s helping you write a legitimate book already.
It’s all about HOW you use it.
I ultimately rewrite everything, so AI is mostly serving as a neat platform to flesh out concepts.
This can really help you develop your own skills and make the story interesting.
Prompt, and you shall receive!
There is no limit to the angles which AI can assist you.
Above I have asked it to flesh out characters and help develop them.
But let’s say I have never written a fictional novel before (I actually haven’t), and I have never taken a writing class.
Let’s say I don’t know what to ask the AI, or really can’t always spot when something is missing. I can sense it, but might not have the right way to tell the AI what I am wanting.
This is a perfect opportunity to turn AI into my teacher, and instead of asking it to write the book, I can ask it to help me come up with writing elements, and story.
It’s all in WHAT you ask, and HOW you ask it!
Now I can take all of those pointers, and come back to this list, as I ask AI to help me build the story using specific things that I might not have thought of otherwise.
It is now my novel writing assistant.
This will add even more depth and dimension to your story.
This can become the prompting template I use to help construct new story ideas, characters, settings, quirky dialogue styles, and more.
That’s enough for now, I’m going to crawl back into my ichorous dark hole and bleed dark ideas into my atlantean reptilian humanoid horror epic from beyond the stars.
Are you ready to try to flesh out a Bestseller like I am?
Thank you for reading!
Until next time….
Onward and Upward Everybody!
