Why is Flat Earth even a thing in 2024?
In 2017, when friends heard me say I was “happy this Flat Earth thing was happening and I hope it took off“,” they laughed.
They thought I meant I believed in a Flat Earth for a second.
Nope.
You see, in my naive heart of hearts I assumed that this little movement would get more people out there performing actual science experiments.
I was hoping it would make more people confident in their ability to experiment, test, and verify information.
After all, we have a lot of new tools that can put this baby to bed, so I had assumed that many people would get out there, either to prove or disprove Flat Earth, end up proving Globe Earth, and learn a lot of cool science in the process!
Boy was I wrong.
I learned a hard lesson in cognitive bias and cult phenomenon.
And an even harder lesson about why this is probably happening.
There are a lot of somewhat hidden cool things that would not be so easily overlooked if more people were comfy and accustomed to TESTING NEW THINGS.
That’s not what happened here.
Most “Flat Earther’s” today are citing the same examples that were used over 100 years ago by the original Zetetic Astronomy movement.
They meant well, but it was a different time back then.
Back in the 1800’s, your average person didn’t have access to powerful telescopes, flight, or any kind of satellite geolocation.
Many of their original experiments were quite rational to the layman, though incomplete and inaccurate.
Today, we have the tools available to anyone who wants to prove the earth is a sphere.
You can order an expensive telescope, have it delivered to your house, and you can book a hotel stay in a skyscraper and go to the top and point it wherever you want.
The distance you will see in the telescope combined with the angle, and distance to the object — will give you the data that shows the horizon does exist, and is the product of a curvature.
Yet — I don’t see ANY flat earth groups posing this experiment. Or anything else.
Points that tend to prove a Spherical Earth:
There is a horizon which things go out of view over. They can not ever be “brought back” into view by zooming in, but can be seen again with more elevation which allows you to see further over the curve. You can always see the top of items over the horizon before you can see the bottom.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
Polaris is only visible in the northern hemisphere.
Sigma Octantis is only visible in the southern hemisphere.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
Star trails rotate opposite directions in the northern hemisphere compared to the southern hemispheres.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
The entire world views the same side of the moon, which is “upside down” in the northern hemisphere compared to the southern hemisphere. Other than being upside down, the exact same face of the moon is seen from both hemispheres and remains the exact same orientation from moonrise until moonset.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
You can fly from Sydney to Santiago in a direct 12.5 hour flight which is only possible on a spherical earth.
There are numerous other flights also only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
A lunar eclipse always shows a round shadow of the earth on the moon as the earth passes between the sun and the moon.
It is always a round shadow regardless of where on earth it can be seen from or the timing of that lunar eclipse.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
Foucault’s pendulum proves Earth’s rotation. In the Northern Hemisphere, the pendulum rotates clockwise. In the Southern Hemisphere, it rotates counterclockwise. The pendulum turns faster if it is closer to the pole. On the Equator, the pendulum does not rotate.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
There is 24 hour 7 days a week daylight at the south pole, whilst there is 24 hours 7 day a week with no daylight at the north pole. These alternate with the seasons. This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
Antarctica has been circumnavigated, crossed, visited, and mapped by thousands upon thousands of people.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
During a total solar eclipse, the Moon’s side facing Earth does not receive sunlight but still receives light reflected from Earth’s surface. The phenomenon is called Earthshine and can be captured using a camera with a long exposure.
This is only possible on a spherical earth. Impossible on a flat earth.
Known observable time zones around the world (based on the suns position in the sky) only work on a spherical earth, the known observable time zones are impossible on a flat earth.
Why is this happening?
Constantly trying unsuccessfully to disprove the earth being spherical still doesn’t prove the earth is flat, in the same way that proving my car is not red doesn’t prove that it is white.
Flat earthers can’t even produce a flat earth map or model with any form of scale on it (and are not even interested in asking themselves why that is). This task should be one of the easiest things to do (and verify) to prove flat earth, but it is impossible.
So WHY do they persist?
Why is the flat earth movement so BIG now?
(If you don’t believe it, search it, the amount of content you will find might surprise you. There are A LOT of people who believe this now, and you better start asking yourself why, if you care about science!)
Cult phenomena explains part of it.
People become fans of things, and emotionally attach to things that are “counter-culture”, especially when they perceive culture to be lying, or otherwise conducting itself badly.
And that explains the rest of it.
The hippie movement happened because many didn’t want war, and they KNEW they were being manipulated into supporting it.
Perhaps the most important thing driving the Flat Earth resurgence — the TOTAL BREAKDOWN of TRUST in our institutions of higher learning, and our government itself.
I blame this more than anything else for the new rise of Flat Earth groups.
People don’t want to be lied to, but we KNOW we are being manipulated by political motives ….almost constantly.
The lies are always justified on public safety, or some other security reason — but over time, and with repetition and expansion, the net result is …. total breakdown of all trust.
Non-transparency, along with LYING to the public for the sake of PR— not the least of which being NASA faking loads of footage and photos which is now verified, and proven — this has contributed most, if not ALL momentum to the modern Flat Earth movement.
People simply don’t trust the institutions that are telling them the world is a globe, and apparently they also don’t have the willpower to get out there and perform valid new tests for themselves.
The last part really got to me for a while, until I realized it’s only happening because I suspect that — deep down, this isn’t even about the truth of the earth’s shape at all — it’s a rebellion against globalism that doesn’t know it’s a rebellion against globalism.
I am not speaking of the belief in the spherical earth here — but old-money networked power structures that congeal in secret, form ulterior motives, and try their best to turn all public representatives into their own centralizing project managers.
To them — information is just something to be manipulated, and they lie to the population about almost anything they can justify in the name of security or safety, all while pursuing their own agendas on the back end.
These types of activities and rationale lead to things like….. faking a moon landing solely to manipulate the perception that we are ahead of our enemies in space travel ability…..
Faking such a thing — DOES NOT prove that the earth is flat, or that the moon cannot be landed on at some point in the future.
It just means that government and corporate PR pulled a fast one, and unfortunately that creates a huge problem later when video technology grows and your average person can now slow footage on their home computer to see the greenscreen bleed on space station footage. Or the creases on clothes from the strings holding people up as they rotate. Or the bubbles in the water. etc etc.
All things which wouldn’t even matter on an old cathode-ray tube TV broadcasting into peoples homes in black and white in low resolution, but fast forward to being able to examine on 4k screens with editing ability? It’s impossible to keep the illusion going.
What I find even more suspicious — the “fact checkers” have the funniest way of deliberately MISDIRECTING, but maybe in this case they are just people like me who really WANT to BELIEVE that we landed on the moon.
I want to believe that. All the curious facts surrounding the event do not support it being easy to validate. I still want to BELIVE we went to the moon, and so I choose to BELIEVE that.
But that’s all it is at this point — a belief.

The fact checkers all agree “Ron Howard did not say the moon was flat on that one episode of arrested development”
Only, that’s deliberately side-stepping the actual factoid about Ron Howard that gives some of the flat earther’s real fuel.
No, he didn’t say the earth was flat.
Ron Howard wanted to make a documentary about the moon landing to prove it happened — and he requested the original raw footage so that he could properly scale it to modern resolution, only to be told it didn’t exist, it was not saved, sorry.
That is a little suspicious, don’t you think?
That is not proof of a flat earth.
It does lend credence to the idea that maybe, just maybe, the moon landing was staged.
Faking the Moon Landing might have actually happened — as there is no logical reason why NASA would destroy all the technology and data about the moon landing if we actually did it. If they staged an event, however, that is exactly what you would expect to happen to the “evidence”. It cannot be subject to scrutiny, because scrutiny would expose what happened.
All of this adds fuel to the fire when we are at a point where the public trust in institutions is at an all-time-low.
The savage irony : many of these lies, once they happened, continued to be covered up, and the primary motive — to prevent the breakdown of public trust that would happen if people ever found out.
Then came the internet. Ooops.
Nasa fakes footage. We can easily show that.
Institutions of higher learning have been caught allowing faked “peer-review” to become validated, merely because their political biases were evoked in the title and premise of the paper.

Institutions of higher learning have also adopted an ideological slant that is now taking precedence OVER the core learning — math, astronomy, logic, etc, seem to be taking a back seat to poorly contrived social and economic theories.

For the last 4 years and counting our government has postured behind half truths and lies about medicine and science for the sake of safety, it collaborated with social media giants to block, demonetize, blacklist, and silence — REAL SCIENTISTS and GOVERNMENT REPS who had dissenting opinions.
For the sake of safety, of course.
People are being hit with contradictions from every angle, and they KNOW they are being lied to.
THIS, more than anything else, is the most bountiful rich-soil for superstitions, cults, and all sorts of half baked movements to form, gain power, and grow.
THIS IS WHY FLAT EARTH IS HAPPENING.
Try to remember that.
