I Live in a 15-Minute City and I Love It!
Truly, everything I need is within 15 minutes walking.
Truly, everything I need is within 15 minutes walking.
No, it’s not a smart city, nor does it ever need to be.
If the true goal is efficiency, your average small town has it covered.
Raymond Washington has about 3000 people; composed of a logging industry, shellfish industry, a fishing industry, and ….everyone else around town.

We have a hardware store, grocery store, most supplies anyone would need; a handful of restaurants and diners, a theater, some pubs, and lots of fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc, year around.

Most of my drives happen when I want to go to places that are not walkable, but even then most of my drives consist of driving to a location, parking, then hiking, or kayaking/boating.
Summer months are spent on foot exploring, and my gas tank can last months.
The last time my tank was filled was June 6th. I have a little under a quarter tank left. Really. (Though, my Hyundai Ioniq gets about 600+ miles to the tank)
Within 15 miles there are also forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, trails, all the things a human needs, and none of which require badging-in and out of a tightly controlled corporate megacity where we exchange carbon credits to gain permission for …. doing the things humans usually enjoy doing.
What I just alluded to seems to be what most of the people who fear the term “15 Minute City” are afraid of.
I can’t really blame them, I agree — some of the proposals of legislators borderline on creating just such a paradigm. That seems to be more of an impending reality for Europeans and large cities, than it is for us here in America or it’s rural communities.
That does not mean everything must manifest this way.
We all have a say, you know.
There are other ways to satisfy the aims of the 15 minute city planners and climate activists, if the true goal is efficiency and improving our quality of life.
It's a global climate solution - if it can get past conspiracy theories and NIMBYs

^ I agree with this person’s perspective. But I will raise a glass of reality and also state, it is best not to be naive at how far this idea can be taken by those who have actively proposed some of the craziest things, who actually are the cause of this “conspiracy” alarmism.
Think tanks are interesting forums…..
I highly recommend reading the proposals and articles found here:

I digress…..
Much of the USA was built around the automobile, that is inescapably true.
But there still is a push by many to return to a more rural way of living, not just for their physical health, but mental health as well.
Before we could earn money online, many of our small towns became economically depressed. I hope to see that changing soon.
Some of these once-hollowed-out small towns are becoming more lively again due to the younger generations who can leverage apps and tools to extend their reach, who are no longer tethered to location-based income, who are strongly desiring a return to a healthier way of life.

Here is how I did it.medium.com
Many are starting to desire living in naturally beautiful setting, having a garden, chickens, goats, the works.
Funny how we have advanced to the point of strongly desiring a way back.
And the rural lifestyle should be championed by those who claim they want to save the environment, but instead, I find quite the opposite.
Many of us are tired of listening to the beans-rattling-in-cans like this one :

My lifestyle is admittedly a hybrid one. I leverage modern technology to achieve location freedom, while at the same time choosing to live a life that is more about outdoor activities and learning to go back to the basics.
If I had to guess, my carbon imprint is less than anyone packed densely like sardines having their carbon footprints tracked by blockchains and AI that can selectively disable their digital wallets for the sake of attaining compliance.
The potential Dark Side of all the automation I am leveraging is always on my mind….
