I was standing at Taco Bell in Aberdeen, WA when I heard some dufus standing near the counter erupt all over a Door-dasher.
“Why don’t you get a real job like an adult?” was the insult I heard this 20-something throw at what looked like a 50-something Door-dasher, who was just waiting on an order.
What prompted this?
The dasher came in, went right to the front and showed his Doordash app to someone, they were helping him.
The angry guy was standing with a bag at the other end of the counter, obviously missing an item or something, waiting for someone and looking irritated, and they came to the dasher first. I suppose the appropriate adult thing to do was explode on the dasher.
I spoke up and injected myself into the convo.
“I bet he makes more than you anyway”.
The guy turned red. “And just who the fuck asked you?”
I smiled.
My job was done.
This interaction made me think of how only 2 years ago, I was dashing to make ends meet. All while I was trading with crypto bots, running one successful online business, while trying to get other online businesses running.
Do people think DoorDashers actually ……dash for a living?
Maybe some do.
But the vast majority I know moonlight to get extra cash. To make ends meet, etc.
I was in a transition period.
I had recently outsourced my 3D print lab operations and had to re-negotiate the profit split, I was bringing in only 30% of my previous income, my crypto bots were only just now starting to work well enough to churn something I could call an income, and I used Door-dash to fill the gaps.
Gig apps are actually perfect for anyone building things.
There are, perhaps, better apps than DoorDash, depending on what you want your side hustle to be.
I didn’t want any brain-heavy obligations like 1099 tech work or Fiver, so I dashed for a while.
I had too many brain-heavy obligations when working out automation and building out workflows and trying to plan a way to hands-free online income, so I wanted any gig I was working to be as relaxing as possible.
DoorDash was literally perfect for that.
Contract gigs on 1099 were often 40 hour gigs in the tech world. So I stopped doing that in 2016 when I left Starbucks after helping them deploy Mobile Order and Pay systems.
Dash had no obligations, no brainwork, just sign on and follow the maps and earn extra $$ — whenever I want, with no explanations needed if I don’t sign on for several weeks.
It’s perfect for people who are building their own things and never know when they may need to take random time and divert it fully to their own projects
THAT is the most powerful thing about gig apps, truly.
DoorDash has another appeal, especially if you love driving around and listening to music: getting to know your town like the back of your hand.
I was dashing all the way up until about 2 years ago.
In 2023, I had just moved to a new area and I wasn’t at all familiar with it. Normally, I have places I go, and places I frequent, but never really get to know my way around — it can take years, and sometimes there are places I have still never been.
DoorDash, I earn a little cash, while getting to know pretty much how to navigate the entire neighborhood/city.
I know my way around pretty much everywhere thanks to my time dashing. I miss DoorDash sometimes….. It doesn’t pay well at all, which is ultimately why most aren’t full timers — but the rewards were more about enjoyment, and time/location freedom.
It was my literal backup plan when I moved out to the boonies and wasn’t yet completely confident in generating an income with crypto trading bots.
If You Could Buy Yourself An Income Instead of Working For It, Would You?
It only takes about 1 years worth of pay…..
No matter where you move in the USA, you probably have access to DoorDash.
Hell — even my little town of 3000 (Raymond, WA) has it.
It’s hard to learn trading when the market is having a movement and you have a time-obligation like a full time job that says “sorry, trading will have to wait, you have to work all-day now!”
When I landed on Martingale bots and started adjusting them every few days and really seeing decent results, there were more than a few days when I was about to go Dash, but the market would tick up, and instead of Dashing would just sit there and try to capitalize on market movements and see what my configurations would do.
Sometimes I would do this mid-dash.
If I get notifications and the market is mid-swing, I just hit “end” on the dash, and started focusing on my trading bots, right there in my car.
I did this a lot in 2022–2023.
If I had a job where I had to show up or be fired, where, if I am caught doing anything other than work, I am “stealing” company time — I might not have stumbled on the bot strategy I am using to earn a livable income.
Even if it seems stupid when you first hear it, DoorDashing might actually be a great little side hustle for people learning to trade.
It’s power lies in the fact you can also put it down at any time, and focus on solely the market, whenever you need to.
Any gig app where your time is not obliged and you can log in and work when you want, and also log out when you want — is ultimately ideal for someone learning to trade.
Especially crypto, where the market doesn’t sleep.
My “see $100, take $100” profit capture method that I talk about in previous stories —first happened on days when I wasn’t dashing and I was capturing profit while babysitting my bots.
I literally learned how to capture money, using a money making app, and became pretty good at it, partly because I was DoorDashing to make ends meet, instead of showing up at any time-obligated job. I was able to divert my attention as needed.
It’s funny when I think about how much that might have actually helped me learn to trade better and develop a strategy.
Not needing to worry about income gaps definitely helped, too.
After all, if trading failed and all my trades tanked that week, and my online businesses didn’t make sales, I could always dash and make sure I could cover the bills that needed to be paid.
Psychologically, knowing it was there, eased my mind a bit.
I have since started a “reserve” balance that I use to pay bills when the market doesn’t play nice, and also so that I don’t have to dash anymore, but in the beginning, DoorDash was certainly more than helpful to ease my mind.
DoorDash might, therefore, be indirectly responsible for helping me become more confident in my mobile crypto bot trading.
Bulletproof Online Income?
The most stable source of independent income I have ever found, probably isn’t what you think.
As Ripley might say, “Believe it, or not”.
Until next time….
Onward and Upward Everybody!
